...following on from the "most difficult solo by brian" post, does anyone have an opinion on any of John's lines or riffs....?

For my money, the most entertaining are Millionaire's Waltz, and Dead on Time.

At the end of Liar, I believe is one of John's best bass parts!!!!!!

Most bass lines were also created by the writer of the song. so John wouldn't get credit for Dead on Time aswell ;)

However, the difference with Liar is that it is generally accepted that while the lyrics were written by Freddie, the music was composed by the whole band, making it much more likely that the current bass player at the time (Mitchell) contributed that particular part.

Apart from the end Liar is one of queens easiest and most basic bass riffs. When i first saw the tab i was surprised it was a john riff. noone of the iconic runs etc. apart from the end its very simple. the person who writes the song would not write all the bass. Johns style is seen in most songs and you can tell he adds a lot to the bass riffs. the hardest fro me would either be - fairy fellas master stroke or your my best freind

I don't think it's a difficult part to play, but I always thought the base in "Flick of the Wrist" was pretty inventive. Specifically during the "Seduce you with his money make machine / Cross collateralise" line.

Very tasty indeed.

IMO Millionaire Waltz and Going Slightly Mad bass lines kick serious ass... I also love Dragon Attack- pretty easy I guess but sounds GREAT!

Dragon attack sounds even better if you drop it down a step or two and play it on a five string. Nice. As far as I'm concerned, Millionaire's Waltz is by far the greatest bass line that JRD ever put down on vinyl.

We are the champions always messes me up when I get a gig with a band who do it. But back when I used to fastidiously TAB Queen and other rock stuff for a popular guitarist magazine (he says dropping no names) John Deacon's stuff was usually pretty easy going.

from my point of view (being a bass player)

You have two types of bass lines

1) The riff (Bites the Dust, Dragon Attack) and then these are usually written by who ever writes the song - other like The Hitman, Stone Cold Crazy, etc, etc

2) Then there's stuff like the songs - Millionaire Waltz, Miracle, Show Must Go On, Play The Game, Spready Your Wings, Save Me - not really bass riffs - more of a bass line maybe

For me though the two I just mentioned Millionaire Waltz and The Miracle are some of John's best ever work !!!!!

the solo at the end of IGSM is amazing, and the LAWS cd really shows some magical bass, but I keep wondering if there are overdubs. Deaky's combinations of scale runs & slides (CLTCL, RGG, TSMGO)ROAR

I think that when Freddie 'wrote' the Bassline (or any other member) he would not write every single note off the bass, he would just say "I want it to go something like this"

Same with drums and guitar solo's

Jealousy is a very subtle, but very superb piece of playing. This was also cited by Pat Badger of Extreme as one of his favourite John Deacon bass parts
