you don't need to be dead to be referred to in the past tense. Take for example...

Richard O'Brien used to present The Crystal Maze. He was replaced by Ed Tudor-Pole for the final series, which was shown a long time ago.

...just as a random paragraph.

I don't understand why I get the shock treatment. I feel like I've been pierced by the swords of a thousand men...

Ed Tudor Pole was really just trying to be the poor man's richard O'Brien. Does anyone remember the piss-take of the Crystal Maze that they did on the Mary Whitehouse Experience? Memories eh?

Yes, I remember it. Hugh Dennis whispering to the camera "I once wrote a hit West End musical, you know".

Worryingly, I'm expecting a thread on it in about five months, possibly accompanied by a discovery that Hugh Laurie has a double with an English accent.
