In my personal opinion, Freddie is, was, and will always be the best frontman of a group. NOBODY CAN TAKE THAT AWAY FROM HIM. I love McCartney and Lennon, Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Steven Tyler and Sting, but they cannot touch Freddie's voice.

At the FM Tribute, people had to change the key signatures, because they could not sing at Freddie's level. Robert Plant, as great as he was with Led Zeppelin, even commented on how hard Freddie's songs were to sing.

We all miss Freddie, but thank God there's the music that this man and his friends created. God Bless You Freddie!!!!!!!! Take care and have a wonderful day everyone!!!!!

Indeed he has the greatest rock voice of all time. But the real thing about freddie for me is his incredible carisma. No one of the namnes mentioned in this thread even comes close.

He was the ultimate entertainer

actually I conducted a survey on a forum I go to and people voted Freddie #1 greatest frontman. If you want to see the countdown... here's the link

http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=352132

Alot of people who should have been on there weren't and alot of people should have made it alot higher... but most of the people I was surveying are between the ages of 12 and 21 (and that becomes obvious when Amy Lee and Billie Joe Armstrong appear on the list...).

btw, John Lennon wasn't on there because people were saying the Beatles had no specific frontman so we didn't include any of the members.

Boy are you right about this one! No other rock star is on the same level as Freddie when it comes to live performance. Mick Jagger is just to silly, the way that he bops around. He just lacks that majestic
quality that you see in Freddie. And Robert Plant's high voice hurts your ears when the volume is up too high.

Some, if not all, of you folks, are probably going to flip out for what I'm about to say. But let me say this: I have been a Queen fan since early 1992, and I never ever thought anyone would ever get more respect from me as a musician, a frontman, a performer, an entertainer, etc. from me than Freddie Mercury. Then, a couple of years ago, I found myself trapped in an almost completely different world of music, and got sucked into it worse than I ever got sucked into anything before. This new world was conducted by another unfortunate victim of some unpronouncable disease, and this person went by the name of Frank Vincent Zappa. After three and a half years of intense research, I've come to the conclusion that FZ was, in every way a better frontman than Freddie Mercury, other than in his talent of singing and stage precense. But Freddie is a very close 2nd. Of course, you really can't compare these two if you're specifically looking for a better frontman of one single rockgroup, because FZ had several different lineups during his career of 26+ years. Once you prove me that Freddie would've been able to conduct a symphony orchestra (or any bigger band than Queen for that matter), or would've been able to write and direct a movie or a modern stage production, or to create such wonderful avantgarde masterpieces like Lumpy Gravy, or in concerts made the audience more like a part of the show by making them all jump up and down on the chest of a fur trapper and recite poetry (or going on stage with the band and make the band play along with what the frontman would tell the audience members on the stage do), rather than being the listeners who would occasionally sing along to the choruses and whatnots, then I will think Freddie might've been the better frontman all along. But a simple "yes he would've" won't do - I need some research and musically scientific proof. Oh, and one more thing... I just think it's funny that Brian May, who has been the owner of one of the most famous guitar sounds in the history and has earned his success in the best stadium rock group that ever played with his own music, has to be told by Frank Zappa that there are no wrong notes in your own music, only avoidable. Well, it's not just funny, it's also comforting.

Ummmm, what do you think "frontman" means? "Talent of singing and stage precense" would easily be two of the most important requirements for a frontman. That's like saying "Helium is, in every way a better gas than oxygen, other than in its use for breathing and respiration."

Zappa was a talented guy, but in the frontman department, Mercury stomped him into the dust, along with pretty much everybody else.

Zappa was the man behind everything he and his bands did. To me, "frontman" means so much more than just being the shiny ornament on the front of the vehicle, which Freddie pretty much was - though he wrote a great (the better, imho) percentage of Queen's catalogue. Queen was (is) a band, a team. Not just the four of them, but the whole group of people involved in what Queen did. Zappa was one man with a lot of stuff going on. He was the businessman, he was the boss of himself and every several hundred people he ever worked with. He wrote roughly 99,7% of the music his groups performed. Sometimes, he just made sketches, on which his bands based some of their improvisations. He was able to conduct his bands as well as his audiences like a kapellmeister would conduct a symphony orchestra. He got his road crew to perform. He even got puppets and toys to perform. Well, sort of. And later, he became a politician with more power on his listeners than Bono will ever have. Lifestyle is another thing, which I consider important in a frontman. I have nothing against Freddie's lifestyle, but I do respect Zappa's way of life a lot more. There's probably more things I consider to be important qualities in a frontman, but to cut it short: Freddie was a better showman and a singer, this is true. It's the whole lot of those other things that make Zappa look better as a frontman in my eyes. (Besides, he had the coolest mustache ever.)

Now, some other person said something about a bad move? Why's that then? I only told my honest opinion, which has been formed from (in my opinion) perfectly valid reasons. If someone got shocked by this, or perhaps interested in Frank Zappa, anything is alright with me, as long as my response is considered as a serious opinion. But I will ignore any response to this, which I might consider to look like some 10-year old overbiased little queenie that had taken my opinion so personally as to feel unable to restrain him/herself from replying in less than 10 words, and the message usually written with several typos and/or with the caps locked on. (Just because one might be dyslexic or linguistically challenged, doesn't mean that person couldn't learn to write correctly. I'm not a native english talker, but I try my best not to appear like I'm not.) Now, I will never stop being a Queen fan, but to tell you the truth, I'm more interested in Zappa's music, because for some part, I don't understand it, which makes it more interesting. Sorry for the rant, but a reply with less than 10 words leaves me no choice.
