Recently I was trawling the site when some talk emerged of Rock In Rio being released on DVD. Someone wrote "god no". Now, I know Freddie got in bother with IWTBF but what else went so badly. I would be intrigued to know.

Nothing wrong with concert, everything is wrong about how it was filmed.

As I've said many times before, Freddie's voice is shot, the opening track on the old vhs tape "Tie Your Mother Down" was very weak. The only valuable thing on it looking back was the live version of "It's A Hard Life" as nothing has ever surfaced from The Works tour era

The performance is definately not as bad as some people claim, but there are several other shows that would make a much better release than the Rio shows.

Which is not completely true, because there is a DVD called 'Final live in Japan' which was released officially in Japan and it contains 'Its a hard life' among other Works-tour tracks.

Some of the camera angles are really horrible, like the one I call pelvis camera wich comes now and then and is filmed from below ;)

The poorest live video - shame really 'cause the production is superb - lights, costumes, stage set etc - problem really is the sound which is swamped by overdubbed audience and muddy rhythm section.
Fred is actually on quite fine form but the voice is definitely suffering and actually sounds painful
Despite the worldwide success of The Works, the band seem somehow tired and go through the motions which is quite uncharacteristic
An interesting curio but no more than that

Do you think they can rescue the show by re-mastering the audio and re-editing the video? I dont know how much extra material was shot for this show that they didnt use in the VHS but could use for re-editing into a DVD. All of the other official Queen live DVD's I have are pretty amazing in terms of both sound and vision, especially considering the age of some of it.

I dunno, on the first night of Rock In Rio Fred's voice wasn't too bad at all. I feel it was quite a bit better that Final live in Japan. The camera angles though...oooh, those weren't too good. The sound wasn't too bad also. I hated Final Live... because all you could hear was Fred's voice and cheap sounding synthesisers.

I actually have Final live in Japan. The last poste ris right about the synths- they sound horrible on Now I'm Here and completely ruin Tie your Mother Down where the guitars are pushed out of the mix. However, it's nice to hear old piano- based songs like Somebody To Love rubbing shoulders with Radio Ga Ga. I always thought that The Works tour setlist was excellent.

If you listen to 'Rock in Rio Blues' the sound is actually very good, I asume that it had been re-mixed.

I think whats on VHS will eventually be re-edited and placed on DVD.
Theres usually loads of footage unused and cut by the directing team and its probably down in a TV Studio basement.
Wait and see - it may happen !
