God save our gracious queen!
Long live our noble queen!
God save the queen!

Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the queen!

I'm so pissed I could spit.

I have a serious question... what happens when the queen dies? If there's a king in power do they change anything? (We Americans are quite naive in the ways of the rest of the world)

It's "God Save the King" when there's a king, I think.

i'm pretty sure the lyrics are

my country tis of thee
sweet land of liberty
of thee i sing
land where my fathers died
land of the pilgrims pride
from every mountain side
let freedom ring

oh wait, that's something else

life is like a box of chocolates...stuffed with individuals.

God Save The Queen was never adopted as our National Anthem by any Act or declaration. It just happened. Sometime in the 1700's I believe...

There are several versions, but you rarely hear more than one verse sung.

The Anthem used to be played at the start of football matches or, back in the day, when our TV networks such as ITV or BBC went off air at the end of an evening. In my local cinema, it would have been played at the end of the night's film. This happened until pretty recently - I saw ET in 1983, it happened then.

It should be noted that there are more lyrics.

Wikipedia notes several versions, including a naval version, from the time of King George.

The full 12" Jam-master Boog-a-loo remix is as follows. Verses 4-6 are now completely out - no-one wants to offend the Scots.....

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.

O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On thee our hopes we fix:
God save the Queen.

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world ov'er.

From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

You should note that the Anthem is rarely used in Northern Ireland, due to community friction. As a footnote, when Queen played in Belfast, "the Queen" was omitted completely. I am unsure what happened in Dublin on previous tours. In Northern Ireland, you'll find other more acceptable tunes, such as The Londonderry Air (Danny Boy to you plastic paddies), or some other such cultural nonsense.

Cheers

Paul, NORN IRN
