Happy new year everyone!;)
Well, I have been watching some Queen videos today and I just wanted to know what's the point of showing John singing in the "somebody to love", "bo rhap", "you're my best friend" and other videos when the guy didn't sing a single note according to his own words.(still we all can see him singing chorus on Radio ga ga at Live aid DVD)
And about the piano playing...did he really played it??Or just miming to a part that was really played by Freddie??(i'm talking about the "You're my best friend" video)
It doesn't really make sense all this fake miming, does it?

He played electric piano on You're My Best Friend. Buy album and read sleeve notes.

About videos where he sings - they're just videos. Queen were 4 people and to show in 4 mins video just 3 members of the band would be stupid, wouldn't?

I agree, but thatmakes people get confused.
I mean, a lot of my friend thought that he was actually singing, and for example, on the STL video, when he joins it seems he's singing the lower part, when it's actually Freddie who sings it.
On the other hand, you have the "play the game " video wher you can see everyone's miming singing but John, and it doesn't seem stupid to me at all, in fact it's beautiful to see him play his base. ;)

Its possible that he sang with the mic turned down real low. It would've helped on the anthemic songs with the big choruses. I know probably 568 people will argue with me for saying this, because every time a thread pops up about John singing, Queenzone goes in to an uproar. Anyway, although I know he says he can't sing, I think he's probably referring to the quality of his voice rather than his ability to maintain pitch. Very few musicians are absolutely vocally tone deaf. Additionally, it would have been very hard for him to play the songs he wrote for the band if he couldn't carry a pitch. Unless he played the melody on an instrument, which I think is pretty unlikely.

I agree, musically he had to be able to sing( even with a poor voice quality )in order to follow up with Queen musical complexity.

the video stl would have looked dumb if just they sang and he stood in a corner. it's just a video. in i'm going slightly mad brian plays a tiny guitar, but not really, that's not confusing. it's just acting.

Which makes me think:
In the 'Spread your wings' (a John composition) video John plays piano in the first part.
But does he réally play piano on the track, or is it Freddie that we hear?

I think John is credited for the piano part in the liner notes.....although I don't have my CD case with me to verify that.

Freddie plays piano on Spread your Wings on the studio version, and of course all live versions as well.

If I had been in the band I would have payed to contribute to Queen's vocal harmonies, well, maybe it's better without John, but I would have loved to have a recording where he sang with the others.:)
