Hi All,
Just wanted to share the news about the newest member of my family. I have recently rescued an abandoned dog. She was dumped on my mother's rual road out in Chester County, PA, USA. She had no tags or identification of any kind. Her & what we believe to be her deceased mother were abandoned on the street right around new years day. My mom noticed her running around the property for several days in the chilling rain. The dog would always go to the body of the larger dog & lay with it. When someone would come close she would jump up & hide in the bushes 10-20 feet away then return to the body when it was safe. Finally my mother got her to come to the door to feed her after 3-4 days of running around. She came right up & wanted to get inside so bad. My mom fed her & dried her off & set her up in the garage for the night. Not knowing if she was carrying any germs she didn't want her in the house right away.
Next morning she was taken to the vet where she was examined given all her shots & bathed. She was covered in ticks from the woods. She was at least 10 lbs. underweight & guesses to be close to a year old. Just a puppy really.
So a friend of friend said they would take her. They have two young boys, 7 & 9 yrs old. Perfect for the dog, or so you would think. After the first night living w/ them the new owners went out & left her unattended. This is not the way to start out with a new dog especially one that dealt with all that adversity. Well these people also have rabbits & cats, the dog went after & killed one of the rabbits. That was it! They didn't want her. They threw her in a crate & put her out back for two days til my mother came to get her. Not in the garage but out in the yard!!! Unprotected from the elements!
Anyway, after posting an ad on a company website with little response I decided to take her in. I named her Keeley. She is very sweet & loving & has adapted very well to being spoiled! She even lets me sleep in "her" bed with her. There are no signs of any ill effects to the life she had before she found me. The vet says she's a terrier mix. but having had an Irish Wolfhound for 10 years who passed away about 18 months ago. Keeley looks like a miniature wolfhound. So I say thats what she is. Its like Jack the wolfhound came back to us as Keeley only a 1/3 the size. Right now Keeley is about 30 lbs. & needs to get to at least 40 before I can have her spayed. If I fatten her up alot she might reach 45 lbs.
Sorry this is so long winded but I just wanted to let all of you know about her. Same as any proud parent! Here are a few pic of her....
Thanks, Steve & Keeley

She is beautiful!!! And so are you for taking her in. What a sad and touching story. And she sounds like a sweetie... I mean, after all, as you said, she's allowing you to sleep in 'her' bed. Very generous pup if you ask me.

:-)

Enjoy her!!!

She looks like Benji!

Check my profile for the mutt we took in a few years ago. We were living in an apartment complex, and he went around scratching on doors till he found a sucker willing to take him in. He's been a complete pain in the neck, but I love him..I guess...sorta..;-)

Biggest pain would be when he decided that it would be a great idea to go explore the neighborhood at 12:30 in the morning.

It's hard not to love him when he has special needs....

Melissa, you can pick him up on your way back from Florida!!!

Steve & Keeley
hope you are both very happy.
a true story for you...when my wife and i moved into our house 21 years ago....the first night we were there, my wife went out to her car to go see her parents and there was this little black kitten..maybe only three weeks old....i swear - i took her to EVERY house on the close tofind out who she belonged to...no-one
she stayed with us and was a very happy and contented cat for 18 years until may 2003.... when she got ill and had to be put to sleep...i still miss her now (even tho she wasn't my cat - she was very independent) - her ashes are buried in her favourite spot in the garden...the biggest suntrap....and in summer i still look at that patch and think of her

That is so touching; it made me tear up.

Since we're sharing...

Twelve years ago, while I worked in a photography studio, I went out back to water the portrait garden. There, on one of the steps was this tiny white blob. I couldn't imagine what it was, I thought maybe a small rabbit. Never thought it would be a kitten... I mean, kittens don't just sit there, do they?

Apparently so. When they're sick.

So, this tiny kitty didn't budge when I approached it, nor when I picked it up. She didn't make a sound and barely moved in my hand. If not for her softness and warmth, I would have thought she was dead. I took her to a neighboring vet who said she was so sick she must have been abandoned by her mother. She was about a month old and weighed less than 4 ounces. She fit in the palm of my hand with plenty of room to spare.

She had a severe respiratory infection. Her sinuses so inflamed, she could barely breathe. Her tiny eyes were swollen shut.

He gave me antibiotics and told me to pray. PRAY!

I took her home, and now 12 years later, she is a loving 10-pound kitty who makes me smile every single day.

It truly breaks my heart to hear that someone so cruel could leave an animal abandoned on the streets. (Far worse doing it in the middle of the winter).

Your dog is beautiful, Steve. She was lucky to find extremely caring people like you and your family. I hope your dog stays healthy, and can grow to be a very happy pooch.

Too bad not everybody can have a heart like you and your parents.

Aww all these stories are so touching.. I love kittens. When I was in Ireland last year we were in this carpark about to get in the car when I saw this little kitten, she was all wet and soggy and her whiskers were all singed and some of her fur was burnt. I felt so sorry for her, so I took her into the car and We went to the petshops to see if anybody had reported a cat missing but no luck. Luckily we know the people in the guest house we stay at so they let us take her in until we could find her owner. She was the cutest cat I've ever seen, she did this thing where she put her paws on each of your shoulders, then kind of stood up and rubbed her head against your face. Anyway we went into the cats protection league and just as we went in this other woman came in looking to rescue cat so we managed to get her a home. I really wanted to take her home but I'm allergic to cats (even though they're my favourite animal ever) which is frustrating.

It makes me sick to think somebody could dump her and worse actually burn her fur and she had the nicest personality a cat could have, I really don't know how anyone could do that.

*sniff* this is an emotional thread :P

Humans don't deserve cats..they are far better beings than us!

The reason I hate Halloween so much is because of all the scumbags in Dublin who throw fireworks at animals and throw cats into bonfires..it's disgusting *cries*

Thats awful, how can they get away with something so cruel?
Cats & I tend to part company. Mainly because my asthma is triggered by cats. I have spent many a night in the hospital being treated for an attack due to cats. But having said that, they are cute. I would have no trouble w/ them if I wasn't alergic. Ofcourse my girlfriend has two cats. Which DO NOT like Keeley even a little bit. We're trying to get them to co-exist peacefully. Keeley just wants to play w/ them. But they are too scared & hide in the basement. Then Keeley spends the evening running through the house crying, looking for them to play with!
Also, thank you all for those kind words & well wishes towards Keeley & myself.
Rock on & see you in DC this week & Philly the next!
