Hello, I just had a chance to see a clip of the concert, and Freddie's voice sounds very strange. I don't think it was just nervousness on his part. Something was missing, either reverb or something. His voice sounded weak, a little screechy, and just not "well".

Is that how Freddie really sounded without any electronic distortions either in tone or echo?

His voice wasn't really good here. It clearly is HIS voice, but it's not nearly as good as other concerts or recordings.

Yeah, I'm watching the part with Ogre Battle and Sweet Lady right now, and his voice DOES sound odd. Freddie usually sung in a high tone, right? And he had vocal nods so he had to kind of keep it low. That's what I think anyway.

No, I don't think he was intentionally singing differently. It's not about style of singing. BTW, I saw the same clip as you did.

I think in this concert, Queen did it's sound system differently since it was an open air concert, meaning there were no effects or alterations added to his voice. I think we are hearing his "dry" voice, from microphone to speaker directly without any alterations. It is his naked voice.

If that is true, then I don't think Freddie's voice is as good as I thought it was. This is very surprising to me. I always thought his recorded and concert voice was his true voice.

I also heard a recording of Freddie singing directly into a tape recorder, and his voice there sounded eerily similiar to Hyde Park's.

If this is true, then Freddie's voice is not as good as many think. I think Freddie relied on reverb or amplifiers to make his voice sound "large" and great.

it depends on nodules he had..

actually,if you have a chance to watch wembley backstage videos, you can hear him and roger challenging while warmin' up their voice..it was a naked voice and surely freddie.. his good old powerful ,operatic voice..

i think you are being too instant about his voice..simply the tuning was not ideal..that was a massive outdoor gig with so much noise and simply the vocal track was not amplified enough...you all talk like you thought freddie's voice was so powerful that he could sing without mic or proper amplification for such a crowd..and even deal with SO much noise around..any mortal's scream disappears in such a mess of sounds!!!

i simply mean that freddie's mic was too weak that day not his voice..he had to 'shout' not to sing that night..that is why there is an impression of a weak voice!!

and don't you argue..lol!

What you see and hear is a bad bootleg video. It's out of tune. Brian's guitar sounds strange, especially during White Queen.

The tape speed and the pitch are not right. Therefore they sound strange. It's a very bad mix.

And the bootlegvideo is NOT a copy of the master tape. The mastertapes are clean. Also, the echo machine wasn't broken at all during the Prophet's Song. It simply isn't recorded on the bootlegvideo. Also, an audience recording of this show proofs that the echo machine DID work. The Free In The Park bootleg LP contains the audience source.

No I don't have the recording anymore but it is the one where he is singing into a tape recorder early versions of the songs from the barcelona album.

The video I saw does not appear to be a bootleg because the way it was recorded showed many different angles like an official footage of a concert would use.

For those who haven't seen this video, go to youtube.com and do a search for Queen. You'll see Ogre Battle and Sweet lady there under 76 Hyde Park.
