We all know that the guys in Metallica are big fans of Queen. They played the FM Tribute show and you can see their full set on the LaserDisc version of the concert. It is NOT on the DVD. They also covered Stone Cold Crazy on their Garage, Inc. album.

I just saw the show last night in San Jose, CA and had Floor 3, Row 42 seats right on the aisle by the soundboard.

So, Brian is sitting at the end of the catwalk by himself with his acoustic guitar and he gets ready to play Hammer To Fall. He asks the crowd, "Are you ready to ROCK? We have a couple of guys here tonight that really know how to ROCK. We dedicate this next song to a couple of the guys from Metallica that are here tonight."

So, standing by the soundboard, right across the aisle from me is James Hettfield of Metallica. He's there with his wife and he's enjoying the show just as a regular fan with a big grin on his face, just like the rest of us! There are barrier gates all around the soundboard area and standing in the very front is Kirk Hammett who watches Brian like a hawk, like he's getting his own personal guitar lesson.

At one point, James leaves the area and then comes back. I was hoping that he would climb up onstage and play with the band, ala Slash at the Hollywood Bowl, but it never materialized. Stone Cold Crazy would have been a REAL treat.

When Brian does his solo, both guys are watching very intently. They were obviously both enjoying the show as much as the rest of the crowd.

I waited until they played a Paul Rodgers song and introduced myself to Kirk, who I had met before, and he was very nice and friendly. You won't ever meet a nicer bunch of guys than Metallica. It's good to see that they are fans of the music just like the rest of us!

On a personal note, it was a thrill for me to see them there because we sell both the Brian May Guitars AND the ESP Metallica guitars at our shop.

Another great night out for Queen + Paul Rodgers in California! They rocked! Highlights of the show for me were the opening with TYMD, Bo Rhap, WWRY, Radio Gaga, Brian's solo and the vocal trade-offs during Under Pressure.

I was wondering who it was that Brian mentioned, I couldn't make out the name of the band. Pretty cool. Too bad they didn't play with them like Slash at Hollywood Bowl!

I'm glad no one got on stage with them. I went to see and hear QPR. I'm not into all start jams. Stone Cold Crazy would have been cool to hear Paul singing though with all the strobes.

I have to disagree with you. When I saw Q+PR at the Hollywood Bowl, when Slash came out to play the twin solo lead in Can't Get Enough, Brian had a smile on his face from ear to ear. Brian is friends with these guys and you can tell that he likes playing guitar with his friends. It was a special once-in-a-lifetime moment that was great to share with 30,000 people.

If the guys in Metallica had come out to play, the crowd would have gone absolutely crazy for our hometown favorites! Personally, I like that Queen has respect from the bands that came after them. It just goes to show that for all of Brian's adoring fans, he can also be a musician's musician. He's just that influential.
