With Queen's massive exposure on "American Idol" this week coming at the same time as the release of "Stone Cold Classics," how well will the CD debut on the Billboard charts? Big debut? Come in at #200? Or will other Queen CDs benefit more?

It will be banned in every country. Terrorists will use special made bombs to blow up the albums into smithereens. Greg Brooks will be locked up in jail for ever and the key of the Queen Vault will be dropped in the Atlantic Ocean.

It may turn into disco demolition night...

Pleasantly surprised if it charts at all, shocked if it charts in the top 100. There are so many Queen hits packages out there right now. If the Amazon sales listings are any indication, the sales "Stone Cold Classics" might have otherwise had to itself will instead be split between it, the original Hollywood Greatest Hits, Classic Queen, the WWRY ed. Greatest Hits, the gold box 2 disc and the platinum box 3 disc, all of which are available from Hollywood. They'll sell a lot of records this week, but it won't all be the *same* record everyone's buying, hence I don't expect SCC to do too much.

That's my guess anyway. Would love to be wrong though!

I just seems silly to buy a hits album, when you can buy the real thing. If someone likes Queen that much (to spend money), they should buy the original albums. Otherwise, they will be paying twice for the same songs if they decide to buy the albums after listening to the "hits" collection. Or, why not buy a concert DVD, which is already full of their hits and also has something you can watch (plus a great guitar solo). If they really want to promote Queen to an audience of people who can't afford to buy the albums, why not include a free CD in a box of cereal (with one Queen song). Of course, it would have to be "all natural" cereal.

Haha, that's really clever. I bet you most people don't even pick up on the "no synthesizers" parallel.

Hopefully "Stone Cold Classics" will do bad. Instead I hope some other compilation (e.g. "Greatest Hits I & II") will benefit. Maybe I'm naive, but I hope to see some Greatest Hits compilation in the top 30 next week. "Stone Cold Classics" can go to hell. My bet is that it won't do the top 100.

Truthfully, anyone who is a Queen fan has all these songs already...seems like a waste of money to me...I don't even think it was a Queen Productions idea, I think it was a marketing idea on Hollywood Records part...kind of a lame idea if you ask me...don't count on me to go out and buy it anytime soon...

Stores will have it featured prominently....the impulsive buyer, not having the Q collections most of us have, will grab it from the memories of this week's AI. Many will get a less expensive 'taste' of Q+PR without having to buy ROTC....it could do well.

Us...well, a studio and live version of 'Take Love' added on would have made it worth purchasing

I agree with you. If the guys at Hollywood records were smart they woul promote GH 1,2,3, instead of releasing another compilation to compete with the other 3 or 4 Queen compilations that already exists in the states.
It´s a shame that they don´t think in long therms. They only want a fast 2 week money.

No wonder Queen are doing so bad in the states, with that kind of promotion...

Take care

Compilations like "Stone Cold Classics" are not aimed at people who are already fans. Of course those people already have the albums. Its designed as a "sampler" for people who may know a couple of songs or may have heard something on the radio or wherever that they liked. It allows a consumer to test the water with a band; he can buy a collection of well known songs on a compilation, with the possibility of investigating the original albums later on, instead of buying an album with one song he knows and 11 more he's never heard of, which he may or may not like, and therefore probably isn't going to do. Compilations are like the worms on the end of a fishing hook - they're not pretty but they attact fresh meat. Record companies keep cranking out "new" compilations with the same songs again and again for lots of bands, because it helps generate interest for the release to be able to say its "new" and it encourages retailers to carry it. You're not going to get as much enthusiasm from Best Buy or Wal-Mart or whatever buy trying to hype "Greatest Hits" when they can justifiably say "why should we order more of these when its been sitting on our shelves for the last 14 years?" "new" old compilations are as much about branding and marketing as anything else. If you're a longtime fan, of course its pointless to buy them unless you just collect releases. I know we'd all prefer they were releasing "Queen - Unreleased Demos Volume 12" instead, but its not like they were seriously looking at a release like that anyway, at least not for the immediate future. The release of "Stone Cold Classics" did not replace a really cool Queen rarity release that was going to come out but for that awful pointless mass-market compilation. Its just an extra release aimed at the general public, so if you find it irritating, just ignore it. That's what most of the record buying public will probably be doing too.

And of course we need a Queen outtakes release like the Beatles one. But a slapped together last-minute afterthought of a release like "Stone Cold Classics" isn't somehow holding up the storied Queen anthology boxed set(s). That's being held up by Brian, Roger, John and Jim.

I just bought this CD an hour or so ago. Call me a Stepford but I typically buy every new product that involves Queen. I do agree, however, that its getting a bit rediculous to release the same songs in a different package every year.

I thought the saving grace would be the last two live tracks. I assumed they would be from an unreleased show. But, lo and behold, they are from the Sheffield show. So there is absolutely nothing new in this product.

Well, there you have it - SCC enters the Billboard chart at no. 45 this week. IMO not a very bad neither a very good score. Here's the link: http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/chart_display.jsp?f=The+Billboard+200&pageNumber=Top+11-50&g=Albums
