Well, this is just a quickie - it's the original extended intro I did a while back, but never posted in full, and I've tweaked the EQ and added a few bangs and crashes, to make it more... er... noisy!

This isn't in competition with Dan's mix, as he obviously put a lot more effort into it than I have, but please post your comments.

Are there some parts from the 5.1 mix??

The intro is nice, the one thing I didn't like is that "booming" sound at 4:09 sec (with every base), but I like that sound on the background at 4:44sec.

Not your best, but still great.

Thanks.

Hang on a mo... isn't the intro bit with the delayed voices from Whirled Peas mix? Btw, what's with the mono sounding synth sound in the intro? Just sounds weird is all.

Didn't see the point of Brian in one speaker and Fred in the other.

Yikes... 4:09 dude. That's just wrong! Too bassy and way out of place. 4:41 as well... And a weird place to put delay on Fred's last vocal bit! Makes him sound like a cat jumping about hocking out a furball!

Sorry man, don't mean to be harsh, but this mix really isn't doing anything for me. Some pretty weird choices. The overall sound is nice, though.

Also, what's that bit of talking in the outro?

Peace,
Adam.

Umm... I did say somewhere else that the intro isn't actually my own creation - it was given to me by "Jeffery", when he was running his forum, but it's only the delayed NOW bit, which I could have easily done myself, but couldn't be arsed! To be honest, I can't remember where the 'mono' sounding bit came from, but I have a feeling it's from The eYe.

Tell Brian (or David Richards) - nothing to do with me!

The 'boom' was supposed to accentuate the bass drum - a lot! Worked for me, but obviously not for everyone. And you never like my delays, Adam! ;)

No problem, I didn't expect to please everyone.

Dunno, mate. Can't hear anything myself.

No, nothing from the 5.1 mix, Dan. The sound at 4:44 is the bit at the end of The Business.

I'm going to have to find the Whirled Peas mix now. I wouldn't want to be guilty of plagiarism. I think it's a fairly obvious idea, so not surprising it's been attempted more than once.

Hell, I can't find it! Can someone upload it, or point me in the right direction? The only other mix I have found on here is one Zebonka did a while back, which has since been deleted.

Ah... just realised the Bri and Fred in different speaker thing on the album version too. I know exactly why I've never noticed and thought you did that. I recently angled my speakers in a different way and it's obvious to me now! Sorry about that. Honest mistake.

The kick's boom part is far too strong. You'd be better off getting a different reverb, one that spreads out and also cut a lot of the low-end below 110Hz. What kind of speakers are you listening on? Didn't you say you had a sub?

As for the delay thing, it's a matter of taste. We're bound to differ, but to me the part you've chosen accentuates a weird sound. Or maybe it's the delay rate that makes it irritate.

I have Jeff's mix, should I upload it?

Peace,
Adam.

Too strong by what standards? Yes, I have a sub, but I have only heard it through my PC speakers (with sub), not my main system. I'll give it a try, and if the pictures come off the wall, I'll tone it down a bit. ;) By the way, it's not reverb from the kick, it's an overlay of part of the end of my Hammer To Fall mix, with the big sonic boom.

It's probably not my best use of delay, I'll admit. I was at a bit of a loss as to what else to do, but in this case, perhaps less would have been more. I actually wanted to add delay to that last guitar run, but you can't really hear that. Could have been done better.

Guess you'll have to ask Jeff that. It was definitely his mix that the delayed NOW intro came from, but I don't think I ever heard the rest of it, so any other similarities would be purely coincidental. Honest! I think you know I wouldn't knowingly pinch anyone else's work.

"Too strong by what standards?"

Well hey, I tried to tell you that anything below 110Hz is gonna be overpowering. It certainly sounds that way. It's always a good idea to, at least, cut things below 40Hz because that kind of sub-energy is very messy in a mix. And can actually mess with the overall sound compression.

Peace,
Adam.

OK, I have now played this on my main system, with a 300W Yamaha sub-woofer on the go, and I have to say, Adam, I can't agree there's a problem. In fact, the 'booms' hardly brought my sub-woofer to life, and before you ask, yes it is set up correctly. ;) Have you heard Avril Lavine's 'Skater Boy'? That has some SERIOUS sub-bass in it, and I have to admit, sounds shit and over the top on my system. From what you have said, I expected my mix to sound worse than that, but it's nowhere near as bass intensive as that track, or a number of others I could mention, such as One Vision, which has a very deep bass kick sound, and in my mix of that, I did actually bring the bass down a notch.

Oh well, I guess we're not going to agree on this, but I can't hear a problem with the bass, and I like it the way it is. :)

You don't have to listen to any of what I or anyone else says. You either take the advice we give or let it go by the wayside. It's up to you.

But the energy behind that kick part with the heavy reverbed sample is too much in respect to the rest of that part of the mix. But because you like it like that, then it's all yours.

And btw, you can't honestly compare Queen's I Want It All with Avril Lavigne's Skater Boy! Chalk and cheese my friend. The kick on IWIA is probably a real life recording whereas something like SkaterBoy probably has a combination of real and generated low-end sounds attached. And that means that SBoy has a mostly unrealistic low-end. Just compare IWIA with other similar kind's of productions. And by that, I mean, search out typical rock tracks that have a similar effect to the big reverbed kick you did and A-B them.

Peace,
Adam.
