Taken from my post over at the AnimeOnDVD.com forums:

Hi.

Although I myself am waiting for the PS3 to come out to play Blu-Ray discs with, I went out and bought "50 First Dates" for Blu-Ray yesterday.

What I want to do for now, for those of you who haven't seen what the Blu-Ray movie discs and covers look like, is give you guys a look at one title, being 50FD itself, to get an idea of what to expect from current and upcoming BR titles.

First, the front and back cover:

(By the way, this is the Canadian version, so there is French text on the cover that you won't see on the American version. The disc itself is manufactured in the U.S. though, so it's not different for Canada itself)

The disc itself (label side):

And a DVD / BD disc comparison:

Comments? Thoughts?

And later on, after someone wanted to see the "keep case":

Okies, I took a few pics with my cellphone's digital camera feature, so it's not the best quality just so you know, but here's some pictures with the "keep case", compared to a normal (anime) DVD case/cover:

Well, if I get lucky, I'll have a credit card soon (hopefully within a week), so I might be able to finance a Samsung BR player, which just came out in Canada a couple days ago. (They're close to $1300 CDN, or $999 US for you guys)

Am going to wait it out a bit though, cos I still have to get an HDTV (am planning on getting an inexpensive CRT set by Toshiba, which I've read good reviews on) before I can enjoy Blu-Ray, and maybe HD DVD down the line as well.

ED: Also, the reason I'm otherwise waiting to get the PS3 for a Blu-Ray player is because it'll be the cheapest first-gen player on the market by this year's end.

My guess is that Sony will loose many of their fans because of teh PS3. They pwned themselves with their crappy E3 show-ting. "Riiidge Raaacer!" zomg. I think Xbox-360 and Wii will do great in this generation. I don't think Blu-Ray will help PS3 too much.

Where are the real Naruto eps? Me miss them :(

Makes me wonder then why Sony decided to very quickly add similar wii functionality to the PS3! Sony are getting a little bit big-headed as they've done some very questionable things like the "no preowned" games thing or the blu ray player in the PS3 being behind the other players that will appear very soon after it.

The thing that really annoys me is Sony ONLY. They're not going to issue ANY of their films on HD-DVD. That makes me hate them more as they've continually done things like this in the past with other sony only products. Depriving the consumer what we want so we are FORCED into buying their technology. Whatever happened to the share and share-a-like philosophy? Films are supposed to be for everyone, no matter what your video preference. And this move is a horrible tactic to win this format war. Something echoed in the PS3 having a bluray player. This will therefore guarantee it'll be the dominant technology out there. Because Sony knows kids will want it, big kids will buy it and the mums and dads will buy it as a present.

Bloody corporations. Makes you wish some catastrophe would take place to bring them down a notch. It's like the way some feel about Microsoft, I'm sure. Shame cause things like the Minidisc, I love. It's just certain things they do that annoy me, like the No Uploading your recordings on Hi-MD. Luckily there was such an uproar about that that led the fans of MD's to make that history. Which is why you can upload ANY type of recording now! Even music from your computer or cd's.

Peace,
Adam.

Dude, it already rulez.
Polls show people are gonna buy the Wii or a 360/Wii combo. PS3 is gonna flop bigtime.

Dark old boy

Save your money, don't buy a first gen player, wait and see what happens, and if you are going to buy the disks, just keep them safe until you can aford a decent TV to play them on, why pay for expensive disks (when frankly the quality of normal DVD's is great,) then play them on crappy TV's?

Do yourself a favour and keep your money in the bank until a clear winner is called, you will be wasting your money if you don't, in a year or so it will be clear who is going to win this race and the prices will come down, first to market stuff is alway over priced and under performs.

Just my opinion but in a couple of years you can get a better set that will last longer and be cheaper than you are wanting to buy now.

Blu-Ray seems to be very popular here in the US. As it was mentioned before, some Blu-Ray players are retailing for almost $1000. That's insane!

Pretty soon DVDs will be obsolete if this thing catches on!

As for the next-generation gaming consoles, I'm putting my money on the Wii. XBox 260 is really more of the same, despite good graphics and exceptional marketing.

Playstation 3 is going to crash and burn. It's already gonna sell for about $600 here in the US, mainly because of the Blu-Ray mechanism. But seriously, who's gonna buy a PS3 just for Blu-Ray movies and such? The games are gonna be at least $60, and God knows no one's gonna want to pay that much, except around the holiday season, where money is no object.

Seriously, I'm not too impressed with Blu-Ray. Normal DVDs are working fine with me, and they will keep working fine with me until the day I die (or the day that Blu-Ray takes over the world, whichever comes first).

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is worth buying the 360, believe me. :)

$1000 to buy a player to play movies that I can just as easily watch on my DVD player? No thanks.

Good point. I'm all for all this hi-def stuff, but when the dvd's are working for me so well, I'm a happy guy. But of course, we all know that dvd will become extinct at some point. Who knows, maybe sony will stop releasing their films on dvd! Man, if that ever happens you know there's something wrong in the world!

Peace,
Adam.

Ain't no way in hell I'd spend $1000 on a blu ray player. Just like all new technology, the price will plummet in 5 years or so.
