" FREDDIE MERCURY:A KIND OF MAGIC" TV SPECIAL

Hi UK fans:
I would like to buy a copy of the England TV Special: " Freddie Mercury: A Kind of Magic". It was aired on September 5, 2006 in the English Station ITV 1 as part of the celebration of Freddie's 60th'd birthday. The program will be broadcast again on September 12 at 9:45 p.m in the same station. I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for the copy (preferably in dvd). Please contact me off-list at
rosita_pr@hotmail.com

I'm a Freddie Mercury fan from Puerto Rico and this program couldn't be seeing here. Thanks all for your help.

I wouldn't bother, it was typical 'ITV rubbish'.

Nothing on it that you haven't seen or heard before.

It also tends to lean towards the 'gay/sleaze/drugs'. Basically 'tabloid TV'

I agree with kevoM - considering the publicity boasted that it had unprecedented access, was stringently overseen by Jim Beach etc.., I think it was a pile of shit.

They interviewed 3 'celebs' - Mike Myers, McFly and Robbie Williams, had a poor man's attempt at recreating Freddie's youth in Zanzibar which was done so much better in The Untold Story, there was hardly a mention of his music (the one thing he was famous for), and it was, after ad breaks, only about 30 mins long. No wonder Brian wasn't interviewed fot it - he probably kept well clear. It was nice however to hear the obvious esteem that Montserrat Caballe still holds for him, and Jim Hutton and Roger did, as always, come across as non-exploitative and genuinely affectionate towards Freddie.

The Mercury Estate must be running out money to keep Mary Austin and Jim Beach in the manner to which they have become accustomed, to keep producing rubbish like this 'documentary', the crap remixes etc...

Just watched the magic remixed and i like it it was much better than the one shown on tuesday, a bit more depth i thought into his life and of course some interesting anecotes.

Still unsure about the use of private footage but sensationalism will always sell so that's why it's there.

One last point seeing Somebody to love made me realise that i saw queen on video in the studio in 1976 a full nine years before one vision and then it made me wonder, was there any other footage taken (outtakes) be interesting wouldn't it.

Yeah, I agree - the 'Remixed' version (watched by all of about 12 people I expect as it was on ITV4) was much better balanced, and had more emoptional weight, as well as featuring more music.

The music was however only played for a few seconds, and then used in the background under talking heads - there was no commentary at all about Freddie's songwriting abilities, nor mention of his solo work - the script only dealt with his private life and didn't really touch on his career (the reason he was actually famous!). Robbis Williams was the only person who actually spoke in any sort of depth about Freddie as a writer/singer.

I was labelling some unmarked tapes just before and I came upon this special... and goodness me, I was SO appalled. I couldn't believe what an unstructured mess it all was. Full of unrelated cutaways, jumbled timelines and blatant plagaristic tendencies. I just couldn't believe that with such material you could have possibly made a botch of it all... and how it could have been approached with such a lack of tact and sensibility.

Well that does it for me. Have to become a documentary maker now. Can't have this rubbish polluting the pool....

It was filmed to appear to be the band recording, as opposed to film of the band recording.

Oh thanks PG never knew that still nice to see queen in a different studio playing/miming and like i said before about outtakes, they were most probably cut on editing and destroyed knowing our luck.
