I have a visitor in my backyard. She's been there for a few weeks now. Here she is...

http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b212/MisserLisser/?action=view&current=spider004.jpg

She is a Yellow and Black Argiope. She was HUGE but she's slimmed down now. Here's why....

http://s20.photobucket.com/albums/b212/MisserLisser/?action=view&current=spider002.jpg

That is her egg sac. Next spring I'll have 100s of her in my yard eating all my nasty grasshoppers that ruin my grass.

Ain't she perrrtty? I just wish the pics were clearer. I do not have a steady hand.

;)

But whatever floats your boat.

I am completely fine with spiders as long as they don't come inside my house. This gal is outside so I am ok to let her stay. I also like that she has all but gotten rid of my grasshopper problem. I live in a house that is only a year old so the ground has just been turned over and the bugs in the yard are all over...well they used to be until my little friend came to my yard!! My grass looks ten times better now that she is here.

We used to have TONS of those in the backyard at my old house... My stepmom is terrified of spiders, so my brother and I would gently remove them from their webs and let them crawl all over our arms and show her. It was so funny to see how she'd freak, lol.

Our family lost our beloved spider, probably from a rain deluge last week. During the day she lived under our outdoor garage light between the light frame and the house siding. But at night we would leave the light on for her to attract the bugs.

She was so cute scurrying over to pounce on poor defenceless blood-sucking, West Nile virus infested misquitoes. If only Charlotte were a little bigger she could have helped with our neighborhood's Canadian "rats with wings" geese infestation.

I am entirely unsure of what species of spider she was, but she was big and brown with 1/2" body and 1" diameter including the legs. I hope she is still eating misquitoes, but, if not, may she rest in peace. Shiff, sniff - pass the Kleenex please.

She is beautiful, though I am absolutely TERRIFIED of spiders!

Just found a huge one this morning, and I got my mum to remove it. Jeez, big, black, long-legged and FAST! Yuck..

No, she is harmless to them. She is outside, not in the house anyway. I've shown the kids the spider and they know to look and not touch. We watch her and learn from her. They know what good she does for us by keeping pests away. Every night this particular spider eats her web and rebuilds it every morning. So we watched her spin some of her web today. Very cool.

I was always terrified of spiders as well and infact I still am but I decided to learn more about them so I wouldn't be so fearful. I don't want to touch them ever but I do like to watch them "work."

I don't have a problem with spider pictures, or sleeping spiders, or spiders lying in wait... but once they move, once those furry little legs scurry - oh, God, the very word 'scurry' raises the hair on the back of my neck - I'm gone. Pathetic me. They move? I move. And fast.

Enjoy her, Lisser.

Here's the one in my yard - if you look closely at the second picture, the underside of her body looks like a creepy head with glowing eyes. <shudder>

Hey Mari

A Venezuelan friend from ours was telling about her trip to the Canaima National Park, and as beautiful and breathtaking as it looks, I'd never step foot on a place where I know there are bird eating tarantulas crawling around.

...and the indians eat them!!
