That happens to me all the time.

Lay down. Shut your eyes (obviously). Try to clear your head. Sometimes with me, my brain is running through everything I have done, need to do, forgot to do, and have regret doing, and alternative choices, my schedule, and so much pointless crap. So, you might have that problem. So, in order to clear your head try to focus on something else. I usually try to think of something to do with nature, like the ocean.

I remember years ago on Christmas Eve, I told my cousin I couldn't sleep (she was sleeping on my bottom bunk). She said, "Well, when I can't sleep I try to think of the ocean. I try to listen to the waves and picture the water along the beach. It usually helps me sleep." And no lie-five minutes later she fell asleep and started snoring SO loud it took me hours to fall asleep.

But ya, you could try that. Or try to think of nothing. But it can sometimes be hard to do that.
And another way to clear your head. Well, now it's freezing so I wouldn't reconmend it. I'm the type of person that needs silence to sleep, but when I'm desperate to try to think of nothing, I turn on my fan. And I listen to the gentle rattle of the fan and only focus on that (and I actually don't think of anything else). That is usually very effective.

Another alternative: Read something very boring. I feel terrible saying this, but I used to read the Bible when I couldn't sleep, and it only took me a few pages to do the trick.

Just when I can't sleep. Advil just helps relax my muscles I think. I wouldn't do it on a regular basis because Advil is not great for your stomach if you use it too much.

That happens to me sometimes. I just imagine stuff and then I fall alseep.

It does happen quite alot if I change my sleeping pattern. So, I try not to.

I hope you got some goodnights rest, darling! =)

I know how you feel! I'm going on two days with no sleep.

Sometimes, Dobbies gets REALLY tired, but just can't seem to sleep. Any explanations? Anyone else ever have this problem? ...Crap. I'm asking for help from strangers ONLINE. What has the world come to?

Well asking 'strangers online' for help is no bad thing. But I'd say that first of all you need to get off the damn computer! Staring a screen of light does nothing but keep you awake, it was stupid of me to come on when I have to be awake in 6 hours.

I find that reading is usually good, although I used to have enormous trouble getting to sleep and worried alot. It's important to have a fulfilling day, relax at night, and let yourself drift into sleep to rest for the next day.

Have you ever tried relaxing music? That's what I do when I can't sleep. Get some Gregorian Chant or other type of music that soothes you, put it on just loud enough to hear it, then lay in bed.
From a biological standpoint, a few things always work for me. First, if you depress (slow down) your breathing, you'll fall asleep. That's one of the characteristics of sleep, slow breathing rate. So if you do that, it can help get you over the hurdle and get you into sleep.
Also, try a basic relaxation technique I learned a long time ago that works wonders. Imagine you are lying on a beach, under the shade of a tree. Then, imagine the sun is moving in the sky, and your feet are in the sunlight, warming your skin and muscles in the feet. Focus on that, and when your fee a nice a relaxed, imagine the sun moving up to your knees, then hips, then waist, then fingers and arms, and finally all the way up to your head. If you do this right, it will put you right out, probably before you even get to your face.
