NEW YORK (AP) -- The Board of Health voted Tuesday to make New York the nation's first city to ban artery-clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants -- from the corner pizzeria to high-end bakeries.

Translation:
Hamburgers will now cost $45 in New York City.

Tis' a sad day in America.

How is that an appropriate translation?

If the hamburger does not contain trans fats, it will not be affected.

If the hamburger does contain trans fats, it will not be sold.

Which one gets jacked up to $45? *sigh*

Only REAL hamburges have trans fat.

You're gonna have to pay for a REAL hamburger now. Of course that rubber soy burger is still .99 cents.

It's okay, MusicMan, I feel your pain. I'm sure you wouldn't be caught dead eating a veggie-burger!

It's NYC. Everything is for sale.

Microwave, I think you are confusing trans fat with saturated fat. Saturated fat occurs in animal products naturally. Trans fat is hydrogenated fat. Hamburger contains saturated fat, but does not contain trans fat. Often, french fries do contain trans fat, however, so they will just have to start frying them in oil that has not been hydrogenated (in NYC at least).

The only benefit of trans fat is that it has a longer shelf life. So, all these years the food manufacturers have been using it for their own profit, not for our health.

It is important to check labels because even trace amounts can accumulate in your system. If a box of crackers says 0 trans fat, read the label anyway. If anything on the label says "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" don't buy it. It is like poison for your circulatory system, including proper brain functioning!!!

Oh, yes, you are right there, Donna. We all need to be very careful with what we eat, that's for sure. But when the word BAN comes into play, I get in a tizzy. This subject really touches home.

Here's a little more info:

CNN writes:
The ban contains some exceptions; for instance, it would allow restaurants to serve foods that come in the manufacturer's original packaging.

and then there's this:

The Board of Health says:
Why trans fats are bad
Trans fats are believed to be harmful because they contribute to heart disease by raising bad cholesterol and lowering good cholesterol at the same time. Some experts say that makes trans fats worse than saturated fat.

Well, is that a scientific fact? They used the word "believed". So somebody's OPINION, however correct or incorrect, triggered legislation?

What about Mel? The Hot Dog vendor, barely making enough money to feed his family? Is this fair to him? No one is forcing people to buy his dogs, but they're the best in Queens. Now he has to go sell insurance or something...

If it tastes good, I eat it. I never look at what the ingredients are. I'm going to die someday anyway.

I'm kinda that way too, but I'm very picky at what I let my kid eat.

Me too. I said I eat it, didn't say I let my kids. They do as I say, not as I do.
