how comes, when southern England gets an inch or two of snow the country comes to a standstill, whilst other parts of the world carry on as if nothing really matters when they get drifts of the stuff?

Ha...I know what you mean. If it snows here, people go apeshit. It's fun. As it stands, we haven't had any snow, other than a flurry, in 5 years..:-(

The country didn't come to a standstill. What happened was:

1. Teachers suddenly lose all power of movement, thereby closing all schools and leaving some parents with no option but to not go to work.

2. Journalists wheel out their once a year "snowstorm causes traffic chaos" story, while commentators wheel out their once a year "why oh why oh why can this country not cope with snow" piece.

3. Everyone else gets on with their lives.

Mind you I did enjoy watching a guy nearly fail very spectacularly to park his Maserati from my office window this morning.

In the northeastern US, the local news will often run a piece on how lines at the grocery store are full of panicked people stocking up on eggs and milk and bread, and that stores are running out of said items so better get 'em while you can!

There was a slight threat of sleet the other day, and my mom thought I was crazy cause I hadn't stocked up on groceries.

the best bit here in my neck of the woods was the gritter lorry driving round the village gritting the roads yesterday at 2pm followed by the road sweeper lorry coming round just after 3pm and sweeping it all up.
it wouldnt be so bad but the snow was not forecast for this area and all we got was heavy rain which washed away whatever was left on the road anyway!

In New Hampshire, where I live, the NHDOT will plow roads if there's a centimeter or more of snow. And everyone from most states I know of spread sand or salt, even when there's a dusting of snow.

By the way, are you from the UK? Your profile says USA.... and I haven't met anyone who used "gritting" for the word "Spreading" here in the USA. Or "Lorry Drivers Union"

Why was he spreading sand or salt or chloride on the roads if they were going to sweep it up later on? Makes no sense.

Being from the North Eastern part of the USA, I don't recall that.

it was salt.doesnt need to make sense in the UK.
there was a news article the other day of a gritting lorry in wales that was gritting the roads in the mountains and the sheep were following the lorry and eating the salt.the driver saw what was happening but just carried on with his job

I live right in the middle of the snowbelt, off of Lake Ontario. I've had like, three snowdays so far this week, and we probably have about 3 feet of snow on the ground, just from this week.

Yeah, it's pretty cool.

We have less snow than usual due to an unusually warm December/January, but now we had some Arctic breezes for the past week. The nightime temperature was around -31C (-23.8F) and -25C for the daytime in my town.

It's always terribly weird when it's cold as hell and the sun shines brightly outdoors.

It was -30C (-22 F) today when I wokeup at 5:45 AM
, but it should normalize soon into a much milder and "habitable" climate (between -5 and -10C)

What drives me crazy is the constant crawl of closings on the bottom of the TV screen. They never used to do this.. there are other ways to find out whether you have to go to school. Annoying.

Here in Kansas, we've had two snows so far.. one minor which melted fast, and one fairly big amount which is still lingering after a couple weeks because it's been so cold. We had one weird day of warm weather which only served to melt the stuff enough that it became ice on the streets.

Well.. here (Holland) they had a "snow alert" and they advised everyone to stay home.... and well... we also got 2 inches of snow. xD

I got to try al little more,

because I'm an asshole but I'm learning.
