Who's the greatest drummer? Guitarist? Bassist? I'm not even going to say vocalist. We all know who that is...

For me the world's greatest drummer has to be Buddy Rich. World's greatest guitarist, my God, there are so many! Well, for me it's always been Brian May. *shrugs* World's greatest bassist, well as great a bass player as John Deacon was he wasn't the best. Let's just say I have a thing for this guy:

Just some compare and contrast, let's see what you think.

Buddy Rich:

You know why I think Roger is a great drummer...he's such a natural...it's like effortless to him...he doesn't have to pound down so hard on the drums-he can go fast and sound really good without doing that. Plus..he sings and drums-a lot of drummers don't do that.

Well, Lets take in to effect that Roger was never really in to Drum Solos. He was more in to playing on the songs. Looking at Queens’s huge range of styles over the years, Roger played them all and kept the great beat that he and John provided so well. I mean, when you’re playing live, you need to be tight, very tight. And John and Roger where among the best at keeping that rhythm and beat going so strong.

Buddy Rich does sound great. He is very very different to Roger. His approach is different. And they are from different eras. One does stadium rock which you’re playing a completely different room, venue and sound.

But I don’t see why we should all get defensive over who is best. Im sure if we asked the Brian and Roger, they would have there favourites whom they think is the best, they wouldn’t say oh I am the best now would they….. maybe Brian,,, eheheh so I don’t see why we cant just say who we like with out being put in a spot were we have to justify why we think they are good. Plus we all know Ringo Star is the best drummer ever, I mean he is the most popular and well known so that makes number 1 right!?!

I wasn't getting defensive, and I'm sorry if I came across that way. I was just interested in comparing the two, after all, like you said, they're both very different drummers from two very different genres/eras.

Guitar:
Dead- Jimi Hendrix
Living- Eric Clapton(even though I don't really like any of his material), Eddie Van Hallen(best living guitarist, IMO), Mark Knopfler, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett, Brian May, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen. I don't think too high of David Gilmour in this area...
Bass:
Dead- John Entwistle, no contest
Living- Hmmm...don't really know...John Deacon, Geddy Lee and John Paul Jones? I'm sure there are better though...
Drums:
Dead- Keith Moon
Living- Phil Collins, Roger Taylor, Ringo Starr, Neil Peart, Carl Palmer.
Vocals:
Dead- Freddie Mercury, Jeff Buckley is second best IMO.
Living- George Michael, Robert Plant, Steve Perry, Peter Cetera, Brad Delp. Uh yeah...

Hey there,

Please dont think i was pointing the finger at you with that defensive business, lol, i mean people in general will berate you (on QZ that is) if you think some one else is better or what not. But your drumer comparisons are good as they a two very different artists and i think you need to listen to it with a difeferent appreciation for the two.

Refreshing-a slight misunderstanding and it was resolved by these two people without name-calling or nonsense. There are some people who post here that hopefully could learn a little lesson here.

really?...ok...firstly...Roger was a frustrated guitarist....and opted for drums when he realised he wasn't good enough as a guitarist...so he ain;t a "natural" drummer

I just can't see the competition....the Mighty Thunderfingered Ox was simply the runaway best bassist...and I don't even LIKE this "who was the best" thing....

DRUMMER: can't believe so many think Roger is a great drummer...especially when more than half of his output used synths or elctronic drums...have these people not heard of John Bonham, Keith Moon, Nick Mason, Ginger Baker, Eric Carr and much of the beatles later output had better drumming than Roger's
BASSIST: - don;t make me laugh - John was good but not great - John Entwhistle, Flea, Bob Babbit, Bernard Edwards, Krist Novoselic, Sting, Chris Squire....they all beat John for abilty and having their own individual style
GUITAR: done this before...but here goes...Randy Rhoads, Tom Scholtz, Michael Schenker, Jimmy Page, Slash, George Harrison, Eddie Van Halen, Robert Fripp and Pete Townsend...

the whole point of queen...was nOT about individual greatness...but the sum of the parts...so lets not get so sychophantic about it, and stay objective.....good, very good but not great or greatest....the sum total made them the second greatest band ever...and that's good enough for me....especially when the greatest band ever (the beatles) didn't claim to have the greatest musicians ....just enjoy the music...for what it is...

This is why I think it's not a good idea to discuss this because veryone always says the same thing about Roger. I have my own opinion so don't critisize me. I want to know why Tommy Lee is such a great drummer...HE's NOT!!..he comes in like 4 for the best drummers list..I mean come on...he's not that good....say what you want, but that's what I think.

OK, lookie here. I'm shocked that nobody mentioned John Bonham. SERIOUSLY! John Bonham and Roger Taylor are my top 2 drummers. For guitarists, Brian May, Jimmy Page, Randy Rhoads, Steve Clark, Phil Collen, I don't care too much for Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. From Bassists, I like John Deacon, John Paul Jones, Roger Waters, Rick 'Sav' Savage, and Nikki Sixx. There are many great musicians in this world...
