Hello all.

I've updated BD and made it the first (that I know of) "Queen Sepia Encyclopaedia". This new version hasn't got as much data on instruments (for now) or photographs but it's got what people wanted the most: song-by-song info and album-by-album.

Of course there must be loads of mistakes and many things to be improved. I welcome critics and ideas.

Btw, check out the interview with Lester, it's dog's bollocks!

Great!

But why are there lists of Beatles and Guns 'n Roses songs? It was a Queen site, right?

Beatles and GnR are there for the sake of comparison. I'm planning to work on that bit rather soon though, so I promise it'll be better.

'Made In Heaven' is a compilation, not an actual album. I'll locate each song in its actual sessions ('Beautiful Day' in 'The Game'), and when I add solo things I'll complete the list. Perhaps 'Mother Love' and the other two will go as 'Innuendo' or simply 'post-Innuendo'.

Anyone has suggestions for the "controversies" bit?

Sebastian, Made In Heaven is not a compilation. NONE of those versions of songs had been available anywhere before that release. Queen Rocks is a "compilation" as are the Greatest Hits albums.

You could almost call Another World a compilation, given the amount of previously released material on there.....

It's not a compilation in the sense of releasing previously available material, but in the sense that less than 30% was actually post-Innuendo. The rest was either solo material re-worked, or 'My Life Has Been Saved', or earlier rejects.

lame excuse.
MIH is not a compilation album.
if that's the case then you can't include NOTW coz it has Sheer Heart Attack on it,or Innuendo coz it has All Gods Peeople on it.

isnt innuendo an italian suppository?

Yeah, right... two songs on 'News' come from earlier sessions. One song from 'Innuendo' comes from earlier sessions.

On 'Heaven', only three DON'T come from earlier.

But I would put it to you, Seb, that just because a number of songs exist prior to the MIH album, it does not (and should not) mean it can be denied. That's as bad as people who say Queen died in 1991. The MIH album represents a huge amount of work and is a great achievement.

I believe you are letting your own feelings get in the way of things here. A personal opinion of something like this can only go so far and shouldn't get in the way of the existing works and information. You're basically denying the existence of something purely because you didn't like it. That's not fair and dare I say, a little bit dictator-like?! lol

MIH is 30% new? What rubbish. It's so much more than that. And to call it a compilation? Come on...be fair.

Adam.

Full disclosure. I hate MIH, so if people feel that taints my opinion I totally understand. Having said that, my opinion of an album is a cohesive group of songs written at a point in time. So SHA the song, although written for SHA the album, fit in with the sparser approach of NOTW, and the band worked on the song during those sessions. Whether MIH was a huge amount of work and was a great achievement is neither here nor there to me, and I respect that other people totally disagree with me. But given the disparity of songs (reworked solo efforts, old songs that may have been written 15 years prior, B sides), I don't personally see MIH as anything but a compilation. If EMI released an album featuring Good times are now, Why don't we try again, The Guv'nor, Magic is loose, etc., 5 years from now with Brian and Roger updating their playing I'd guess some people would call that a Queen album. Others wouldn't.

As a matter of fact I like 'Made In Heaven' a lot ... it's possibly the only Queen album where I like all the songs.

You've got a point where you mention I'm letting personal opinion get in the way, but I'm not denying the album's existence. I merely don't consider it a legitimate album. It's more a compilation sort of thing, to me. Of course it's extraordinary: well-produced, excellent mixing, and the playing is brilliant (not only Brian's, who seems the only one people credit here).

Likewise 'No One But You' is, to me, better than any Queen song. But it's not a Queen song, it's a Brian + Roger + John song. Thus, it won't be on the website, for now.

'Mother Love', 'Fool Me' and 'Winter's Tale' are of course another story ... I've got to include them, sooner or later.

BTR, the point being, it's never about personal feelings with something like this. It's about this site that some fans have visited and are wondering where all the MIH info is at. The very least Seb could do is set up a page called MIH that links to all the songs he says he has already written in elsewhere, e.g. Heaven For Everyone is found in roger taylor's MB&DTK section.

Adam.

P.S. haven't really visited the site, so don't know the layout of those MIH songs.

Good point Adam. I guess from Seb's POV he doesn't see MIH as an album, but in the world of Queen it is and that should be the deciding factor. These things where people's opinions are involved are tricky to decipher!

"But I would put it to you, Seb, that just because a number of songs exist prior to the MIH album, it does not (and should not) mean it can be denied. That's as bad as people who say Queen died in 1991."

See that isn't a strong argument when you're talking to Sebastian, because that's his opinion on the matter...

But anyway!

"The MIH album represents a huge amount of work and is a great achievement."

I'd stand by that - there's a few that don't though! Fair cop... I skip "My Life Has Been Saved". Bad me.
There's parts of MIH that of course betray the fact that it was made 'after the fact', so to speak, but I genuinely feel that the 95 version of Made in Heaven (the song) sounds as good as any Queen song there ever was.

"Likewise 'No One But You' is, to me, better than any Queen song. But it's not a Queen song, it's a Brian + Roger + John song. Thus, it won't be on the website, for now."

I can respect your opinion on this, of course. But... hmm, ya know, why is Sleeping on the Sidewalk on your site then? Freddie wasn't on that, was he?? :P
I suppose at this point, one must guess whether or not Freddie would've 'appreciated' it or put his stamp of approval on it.... who knows.
I believe he'd have made the concession if he were physically able to. After all, they backed down and let him have Delilah didn't they??

"'Mother Love', 'Fool Me' and 'Winter's Tale' are of course another story ... I've got to include them, sooner or later."

If I hum Face it Alone to you, can you help me figure out who wrote it?

Sebastian, I know you're a perfectionist but to me it seems that you can never decide what you want to do :-) Every x months you delete your previous site and start from the very beginning... that's not a good thing if you want to hear my opinion :-)

> I genuinely feel that the 95 version of Made in Heaven (the song) sounds as good as any Queen song there ever was.

And better than many, in fact.

> why is Sleeping on the Sidewalk on your site then?

Sleeping (no Freddie), Bijou (no Roger or John), Melancholy Blues (no Brian), Body Language (no John), Nevermore (no Roger), Fight From The Inside (no Freddie or John) and others are there because they were produced by the four of them, even if not all of them played instruments or sang there. 'No-One But You' is, as they said on the Rocks booklet, another story. For me it's a Brian song which happens to have Roger and John participating. But neither that is a Queen song, nor 'Man From Manhattan' or 'You Nearly Did Me In' are.

> If I hum Face it Alone to you, can you help me figure out who wrote it?

I doubt it.

> I know you're a perfectionist but to me it seems that you can never decide what you want to do :-)

That's correct. After four years I'm aware that I've got to get serious about this whole thing. I really hope that this encyclopaedia is the definitive version. Otherwise it'll be like GnR and 'Chinese Democracy'.
