What a horrible bit of "news" you posted. That certainly is not news. That's from a Toronto newspaper (The Sun) which is essentially a right-wing tabloid. If you don't like the musical, that's fine. Have you even seen it? Somehow I doubt it, since you're from Ohio. Have you nothing better to do than feed your personal agenda? Why not post the article from the Toronto Star? That was much more unbiased. It wasn't a completely positive review, but at least it was generally honest and fair in most places:

http://www.thestar.com/article/201792

The musical has been getting standing ovations every night. The cast, band, and crew are working their asses off every night. They are an incredible bunch. The musical has made tens of thousands of people walk out happy over the past month, and just because you're not one of them doesn't give you the right to post that crap as if it were actually news. I hope it made you feel all tingly inside, to know that in your small way you may have made someone think twice about seeing a show which you condemn, even having not seen it yourself. What have you done to make people happy lately? Or does your negativity drive you outside of this forum as well?

Someone posted a review. Big deal.

For a second there I thought I was reading Brian's soapbox ... but it was not quite as dramatic or angry as Brian.

Both reviews praise the music, but complain bitterly about the lame story ... although the rightwing tabloid focused more on complaints about the storyline.

The right wing tabloid stated:

"Suffice to say that the actors are all very good singers. The music is fine."

By the way, I have seen the Musical on video (twice) during a Queen convention, and the story is a lousy 2112 ripoff that ruins the music.

Roger: I like it. If you don't. Sod you!

Sorry Bob but it is common to post reviews as news on QZ. I don't see Mickyparise as having a hidden agenda or negativity in posting the review.
'We Will Rock You' has gotten negative reviews everywhere but the fans seem to love it so it isn't really a big deal. Think of the smiling faces, you contribute to, every night and ignore the negative stuff. I'm hoping to get out to see it myself and no bad press is going to dissuade me. I'm not going for the storyline but for the music and spectacle of the performance. Were you as sensitive to the reviews for 'Mamma Mia' when the Mirvishs put that on?

Yeah, you're right... famous people shouldn't be allowed to voice their opinions when they're angry about something.

The right wing tabloid stated:

"Suffice to say that the actors are all very good singers. The music is fine."

You actually think those two reviews were on the same level? Do you honestly not see that the Sun reviewer had an agenda to fulfill? That is what journalism is all about!

What you quoted was the only remotely positive thing in the Sun review.

By the way, I have seen the Musical on video (twice) during a Queen convention, and the story is a lousy 2112 ripoff that ruins the music.

I've seen videos too, and I don't like them either. Theatre is meant to be live. If you go to see the musical without having your opinions formed before hand, you might actually enjoy yourself.

Then tell me, why else would someone go out of their way to post such a negative review?

Think of the smiling faces, you contribute to, every night and ignore the negative stuff.

Yes, I always do that... but is it not possible to give attention to both?

I'm hoping to get out to see it myself and no bad press is going to dissuade me. I'm not going for the storyline but for the music and spectacle of the performance.

Right on. Although the story isn't overly original and is full of humour on the surface, it really does speak a lot of truth about where music is now and where it is heading. The only negativity on that front seems to come from people who haven't noticed how much popular music has plummeted in the last couple decades.

Were you as sensitive to the reviews for 'Mamma Mia' when the Mirvishs put that on?

Naturally, there's some self-interest because I'm involved with the show. Most people are quick to defend things that are close to them. I'd say that's human nature.

While I understand why you are upset, Bob, I can only implore you calm down a bit. Mickey has been posting news stories to QZ for quite some (I dare say only Richard has posted more). Although he doesn't post to the forum all that much, he does post a bunch of news bits that he finds all over the internet. There is, as far as I can tell, no agenda whatsoever.

Here's a news story he posted just a few days ago:
http://www.queenzone.com/queenzone/news_view.aspx?news_id=4165
The full story, which is linked in the QZ news story, seems pretty favorable to the musical.

Though there is no easy way to search posts anymore, I suggest you go to the old forum and do a "search by username." There you can see just how many newsclips he has posted. If you wanted, you could then troll them all on the new board to see what agenda he may have.

Hi Bob,
NO WAY was it intended as a negative news story, just thought hearing from different avenues and such, that's all! (I beleive in other peoples opionions) and Sorry if you think I'm negative about the Musical, I'm not, I LOVED IT, I went and seen the LAS VEGAS show, which was Excellent and I'm going to the Tornoto show next weekend, and got tickets for two shows! I wanted to go on Opening night, but could'nt due to work. I pray that the musical goes SUPER in Tornoto and glad they extended the dates.
I've been a die-harded fan since way back in '74.

So Sorry you took the news wrong......and for the fans sticking up for me, THANK YOU SO MUCH! Very much appreciated!

Take care and hopefully this clears up things.....

Ironically, Queen usually gets slagged by the left wing press for their pomp and ceremony and capitalistic stance so I'm not sure the writer/paper's politics are important. I certainly didn't think it was an attack article, and the writer is generally fair. The fact that he can't imagine it's the same Ben Elton who did Blackadder shows he's not pre-disposed to bashing the musical. It is hard in Sir GH's position to see something you're so passionately involved in getting trashed. Yet Sir GH is one of the biggest critics of Greg Brooks (not picking sides, just stating facts), and I'd bet Greg is in the same boat of being too close to things to see objective criticism. To paraphrase Sir GH's quote, I'm sure at times Greg has thought that "Naturally, there's some self-interest because I'm involved with the CD/DVD/book. Most people are quick to defend things that are close to them. I'd say that's human nature." It's like Brian talking about the good work the Torpedo Twins have done for Queen, or saying how good the 30th anniversary release of ANATO was. It's hard when there's emotional atachment to say it's crap, as it's a reflection of you, peripheral involvement or not.

Well did'nt mean to start a issue about this, but only posted the news I get over the wire, and bad or not, but just letting Queen fans now what is going on! That's all! In the USA, and if i offened anyone, then sorry just trying to get news to overseas from the USA! Whether bad or good, and I don't agree with the neagive things about Queen, still would like people to see the news. That's All. I'm a very huge fan of Queen and like to see great news in the USA, AND try to post them as i could, but there's going to b good and bad, which i feel is only free! Which no! I don't beleive in bad reviews, ticks me off, but just like to post the news as they happen in the USA...... and if it ticks people off then sorry just reporting the news from the USA.....
Not to b navie, or anything, but seen QUEEN in 80 and 82 at the Richfield arena, and LOVED IT, and seen the QUEEN +PR concert in Pittsburgh, which they were staying at cuz it was across from the Mellon Arena, and not saying about the musical i went to in Las Vegas and going to the TORONTO show. this weekend, so i don't post bad news, but news from the USA I'm not sure anyone from another country would no, that's y......and bad or good, I feel it's only being helpful! But GIR G, thinks's I'M wrong? Can't understand that? cuz I'm A DIE HEART FAN..AND have a memorial in my studio of FREDDIE ..... and would never disgrace the legend they are!

Indeed it does. Thanks a lot for taking the time to post, especially after I was so harsh towards you! Glad to hear your point of view on this.

I see your point, but I'll disagree, because in my case, I have substantial proof that Greg's book contains a lot of crap... whereas a review is based on someone's opinion. But from the emotional point of view, of course, you're right.

I agree with you about Greg's book, Sir GH, as you've noted his factual mistakes in detail. I just felt that the reviewer, in stating that he was familiar with Ben Elton's works, and thinking WWRY wasn't as good, wasn't giving a review based on a personal dislike. Generally any American mag (Rolling Stone) gave Queen albums bad reviews, which had little to do with anything but the writer or magazines' agendas. (Dave Marsh's review of Jazz is arguably the worst review in the history of rock music as it's filled with personal biases, hate and factual inaccuracies.) Maybe the Sun writer was incorrect in stating that the audience didn't laugh since he didn't like the story, but his perspective is probably coloured by the fact he doesn't like the story, which virtually no one does.
