OK, I know you're probably fed up with those annoying TV ads, but what intrigues me is that this debate has gained so many biased opinions that now they're pretty much equal to arguing about politics, religion, or sports.

From my own perspective (as a person who has always owned a PC, and used Macs on the side) I'm quite confused about what to choose.
Back when I was a computer graphics major (6 years ago) all that was used in my school were Macs. I started to gain a lot of hatred towards Macs for being trendy, overpriced, and overhyped by the Mac fans. I came to the realization that Macs had the exact same problems PCs had, and were definitely not worth spending the money on.

However, over the past years I have been particularly impressed with the practicality and functionality of the latest version of the MacOS and their compatibility to accept Windows made for products.
My dilemma with Macs is that they are still way overpriced. I know Mac fans will call me cheap, but I still see that Macs have some of the same flaws as Windows (such as ocassional freezing... although not as common on Macs).

I will admit that Macs have shown good improvement, but is it really worth spending double the price on a Mac that has the same technical specs as a PC?

Any opinions?

It depends what you want to do primarily with your computer. I own a Mac, have owned several Macs since I was a computer user, and my parents have been primarily Mac-centric. In my line of work (book designing), no one uses a PC unless you're an editor.

If you're heavily into gaming, do not get a Mac, unless you really like anything Sim-related (or Myst).

Yes, Macs are trendy, and Macs are expensive, but I've never had a problem with my computer; never had to take it back, have it repaired, or anything like that. I got my first Mac (an iMac) in August 2001, and replaced it four years later because I needed something faster, and upgraded to a Mac Mini. For my whole upgrade, it only cost about $1000, including a nice flat-screen monitor that wasn't made by Mac. If you want a nice, cheap Mac, go with a Mac Mini.

I find that the debate between Macs and PCs is pretty stupid. They both have their merits, and they both have their drawbacks, just like anything in life. It really depends what system you'd be most comfortable working in. I know that whenever I jump on a friend's PC, I feel like I'm in a foreign land and I instantly become technologically retarded, so I always feel much more at home on a Mac.

e: oh, and in all the years that I've owned a Mac, it has never frozen, even when I had several programs (QuarkXPress, Photoshop, iTunes, etc.) open at one time.

Hey Lester...

I should have probably mentioned this on the other thread, but YOUR BOOK KICKS ASS!!

My girlfriend got it from Barnes & Noble the other day, and I never expected it to be so full of information and compelling. It's absolutely the closest thing that's even been written to be called the "Queen Bible".

I liked how you even dared to include in actual quoted words the harsh criticism of the band by the music press. Most authors would only focus on the positive, but your book has a lot of perspective.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

P.S. How long did it take you to write all of that?

I've used a PC since I was little, so I guess I'm much more used to that then a Mac. Since I started Music Technology at College I've had to use the Macs over there. Which is good of course for the Music and Media programs that I have to work with everyday.

I myself prefer PCs though.

Also, thanks for the kind words, Jingles... I'm glad you and your girlfriend are enjoying it! I tried to be as subjective as possible, no sense in sugar-coating everything when that's all other writers do. Took me about six years overall.

Just use both, it's what I do. The two network quite nicely, and if there's something I can't do on one, I get on the other.

Having said that, a computer is only as good as it's user.... if it's not maintained properly, it's pretty much always going to be a sluggish pile of shit, no matter what fruit it's named after.

To me, the Mac OS is better. Windows has been playing catch-up for the better part of 15 years or whatever, and still isn't as good - I saw a couple of videos showing how derivative Vista is... talk about a belly laugh.
I hope Apple don't take any cues from Microsoft though.... OSX is beginning to show a couple of signs of bloatware if you ask me. Updates get bigger, the features more frivolous..... I'm happy with it the way it is, Mr. Jobs. Don't fuck it up!!

"mac sucks as hell.

Well that clinches it, I'm going to throw mine out right this instant. Never mind all the useful shit I've been able to do with the Apple machines I've had since 1995......

(yawn)

I hate the mac vs pc debate. And the mac os versus windows debate as well. I like to be happy with what works and don't feel the need to belittle others for their opposite choice to say, my own.

I've always used PC's. Plus a Spectrum and a commodore64! And I have gotten along with pc's brilliantly. Better than how others seem to, i.e. crashes and BSOD. Not much for me. And like it has been said, it's how you treat your machine that will bring about those bad vibes.

I used Macs at my music college for around 2 years and didn't come away thinking, wow, I need to change my ways! No. In fact, I didn't see what all the fuss was about. You know, those Mac users that say Macs do it better and feel the need to get one over on windows?!
lol I saw a video of S.Jobs and one of his cohorts talking about windows. He said something about how over the last 5 years they've developed a number of OS versions (5-6 I think) and then compared how many versions of windows there had been over that same time, i.e. one. And I just thought, eh??? So, they're boasting that they've developed all these different versions, whereas windows has been XP that whole time. How is that worth boasting about? I didn't get that. And sometimes wonder if Apple are getting a little cocky.

Anyway, rant over. I do video editing, music production and the general usage like web browsing, games or say word processing on a pc. As far as I'm concerned, you like what you like and you don't like what you don't like. Simple as that.

Interestingly, I recently installed Mac OS X on my laptop along with Windows XP Pro. It was nice, but didn't get to do much with it. Just scrapped it in favour of getting the space back for more virtual instruments! You can never have enough!! lol My name's Peter Griffin. Good night everybody!

Adam.
