News > New Muse Album Draws Comparison to 'Classic Queen'

Added on 17-Sep-2009

The New Muse Album 'Resistance' and follow up to 2006's Black Holes and Revelations sees Muse blending their stadium rock sound with classical music and opera.

A key track on the album - United States of Eurasia - has drawn comparisons to classic Queen. Asked if this was something that was quite deliberate? Don Howard replies "I guess people have thought it sounds a bit like Queen, particularly that big chord and the big harmonies," says Howard.

"When we did that in the studio we laughed a lot because it was so uplifting. It's a real chest out, hand in the air moment in the song.

He adds: "A lot of the recording process made us laugh - and that was one of those when we chuckled a lot, and we still do even when we play it live."

Its an excellant album and you can sure hear Queen in the mix.Got tickets to see them in November at Sheffield Arena.I think they rival Queen in their heyday live.

I think MUSE are an average Band but probably quite good by today's standards, but they are hanging on to another Band's coat tails. I suppose Queen themselves would take Muse's efforts as a compliment.
You are wrong comparing these guys live performance to Queen in their heyday, for a start they don't have the world's greatest Rock Singer to lead and not that (buffoon Rodgers), and the imcomparable power trio behind him.

Did you ever see MUSE live? As a trio they have amazing power on stage. And Matthew Bellamy must be the best singer in rock today. He does things on stage that Freddie could never do.I love Queen, but technically MUSE are way ahead of them. Seriously. You don't see a better live band than MUSE.
Seen Queen in their heyday and seen Muse a few times as well. It is true that Matt Bellamy reaches the chords that others simply couldnt reach, but then I have head Rock in Rio Blues and that is truly fucking amazing!  Muse are a great band who make the noise and have the stage presence that few other trio's could even hope of making nowadays! I will certainly buy their new album and go along to their next show in France. Nice to have a great band to go and see live.

I've been following Muse since their second album - they're a very impressive threesome.

They seem an intelligent bunch of lads, play their instruments very well and are fantastic live....with a fanatical following - dies all this sound familiar

The mixture of rock and classical music, guitar harmonies, soaring vocals really does bring to mind Queen at their most "pomp"- I hope they don't suffer the flak that Queen have when they wanted to try something different..."It's only a bloody record !!!"

The Resistance is great! Muse is the best band in the whole world right now, and they really love Queen.

I don't know enough about today's music to say whether or not they're the best band around, but if they are then I'm... happier than I am when I get forced to listen to Kings of Leon or Taylor Swift on the radio in public places.
They are indeed a talented bunch, good on them.  They'll be in good shape as long as they keep the material coming.

I'll confess I don't think the singer is the best around today.  I've heard some fab stuff from him but I don't think he was that great on that 'Queen-sounding' track everyone is on about.  Great song though.
In my opinion United States Of Eurasia is one of the weaker songs on the new album. Yes, it sounds like Queen - but it sounds a bit unfinished IMO (except for the ending). Tracks like Unnatural Selection, Resistance and MK Ultra are waaaay more interesting than USoE IMO.

Agreed,  I have one muse CD. They're good by today's standards, but not great by any means.  The new album is getting mixed reviews.

My only criticism of Muse (particularly on their latest work) is that they are not the most original band out there.
However, I give them high props for re-inventing what's been done before and adding their own touch.
They are certainly far more original than The Darkness, who seems to carbon copy what Queen has done.

As I live band, I have no doubt in my mind that they are the best live act in the world today.
Their performances are simply mind blowing. They are so good live that they might upstage U2 at their upcoming US tour.

I'm going to the show at Giants Stadium next wednesday.

I agree.  I think USoE is the weakest track on the album, because it's the least original.

On a different note: did you get to see Depeche at the Madison? I remember you told me you were a big fan. The show was wonderful.

Muse's last album is probably their weakest. But a week album by Muse's standards is still better than most albums out there.

Asking permission to leave.

Good comments on this folks. Have to say that the degeneration into a comparison as to how good Muse are compared to Queen was predictable for this forum, however I think we need to celebrate the fact that a top band of today (and they are, no doubt about it) are citing Queen as an obvious influence. For those familiar with Muse, these parallels have been drawn on many occasions by fans, critics and indeed the band themselves - salute. Regards one of the best bands around today, I have to say that Rush will still take a bit of beating in my book, however you have to remember that 'best' live band is what YOU think is 'best' F**K anyone eles's opinion. The Pixies gigs coming up soon will also be an acid test of who is best out and about at the moment too!

I've been listening to the Muse album all week. If Freddie were with Queen today this is the type of record they would be producing. Every song is different and you can hear the Queen influence everywhere. If Oasis ape The Beatles, Muse, undoubtedly, are inspired by the nasty Queenies and it's great to hear original "Queen" music even if it's not recorded by them.

A friend told me he thought the track United States of Eurasia sounded like Bellamy was singing United States Of Erasure. In the Queen cannon I can't think of any song our Fred might have namechecked the electro-poppies group. Maybe live, need to check the bootlegs, Freddie sang Under pressure as Unerasure.

Erasure
Pushing down on me
Pressing down on you no man ask for
