QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS BRING ON RAZORLIGHT FOR THEIR LONDON HYDE PARK CONCERT JULY 8.As the mighty Queen thunder through Europe performing 19 sold out dates with former Free man Paul Rodgers before heading into the UK next week for seven further concerts, news has emerged that the band has invited NME Best New Band winners Razorlight to join them on stage for their massive summer outdoor date the band plays in London Hyde Park on Friday July 8.
It appears that Brian May, Roger Taylor and new front man Paul Rodgers have been following the rising tide of fortune of Brit-pop’s newest cult band whose current single “Somewhere Else” crashed into the singles chart at 2 and continues to sit comfortably in the upper reaches of the chart.
While May and Taylor might be perceived to being entrenched in the music of their 80’s heydays, it appears the two are no strangers to the healthy show on new British bands, having picked up on Razorlight with the release of their June ’04 album, ‘Up all Night’. Hence the invitation from the Titans of rock to have Razorlight share the stage with them at Hyde Park.
Says Queen’s Roger Taylor, “Some might be surprised by it, but Brian and I definitely listen to the new bands coming through. In addition to Razorlight there are several other bands we would love to have with us in London. It’s great these boys said yes.”
Queen + Paul Rodger’s Hyde Park date on July 8 comes almost 30 years since they last appeared on the hallowed lawns of the Royal park. Then, still riding on the incredible success of their single ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and the follow up, ‘You’re My Best Friend’, the band attracted a record crowd of over 150,000 on September 18, 1976.
The Hyde Park date crowns a phenomenally successful return to touring by Queen, which next week sees them playing further sold-out dates which begin at Newcastle Arena next Tuesday, May 3, and extend across the UK before hitting London Wembley Pavillion on May 11, Belfast Odyssey May 13 and finishing up at Dublin’s The Point on May 14.
London Hyde Park is one of four big outdoor dates Queen + Paul Rodgers play in July, with others in Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands.
