Queen + Paul Rodgers ''Bohemian Rhapsody'' – The Download
It was voted the favourite single of all time by the readers of the Guinness Records book of British Hit Singles, and Radio 2 listeners recently picked it as their favourite song of the 70’s. It is the only song in pop history to have been a number 1 single twice for the same artist, selling a million copies both times. It is a song which has become part of our history in the past 30 years. It could only be Queen’s 1975 (and 1991) No.1 giant, ''Bohemian Rhapsody''.
Over the years there have been several versions – Elton John and Axl Rose rocked Wembley Stadium with their interpretation with Queen members Brian, Roger and John, at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992 - and such diverse artists as Rolf Harris, G4, Montserrat Caballe and Bruce Dickinson, Russell Watson, American Idol star Constantine, and Bad News, among others, have all paid their respects to Queen with their own individual treatments of the song.
But no-one ever sang the song with Freddie; not until Queen launched themselves back on the road this spring with legendary Free/Bad company singer and musician Paul Rodgers out front.
The treatment of ''Bohemian Rhapsody'' was one of the most challenging issues in building the tour set. But Brian May and Roger Taylor’s decision to let Freddie himself, through the medium of previously unseen video footage, deliver the lead vocal, climaxing in a collaboration with Paul Rodgers in the final section of the song, proved a masterstroke, and one of the outstanding highlights of the current Queen + Paul Rodgers concerts.
As the triumphant tour draws to a close with Queen + Paul Rodgers reaching Hyde Park this Friday, July 15th, this utterly unique version of ''Bohemian Rhapsody'' is finally available to the thousands of fans who have asked to hear it again. To celebrate the band’s return to Hyde Park after 29 years, this Queen + Paul Rodgers live performance of the song is being made available for download on the official Queen + Paul Rodgers tour site from midnight Friday 15th July.
This is a fine way to celebrate the Return of the Champions and a fine taster of the DVD and double CD live recordings to be released later this year. This version was recorded at Ahoy in Rotterdam* on Tuesday 26th April, 2005 and will not appear on any forthcoming Queen + Paul Rodgers product.
