News > Queen Song Played On American Idol

Added on 19-Jan-2005

On Wednesday evening at 8:53pm (Eastern Time) on American Idol, there was a video montage of people who had been turned away by Paula, Simon, and Randy.During this montage they played "You're My Best Friend" for approx. 20 seconds. This then led into the next performer who ended up not making it to Hollywood. The video montage consisted mostly of contestants hugging other contestants who were not able to continue on with the competition. There were some tears and many sad faces, but the satirical irony of the song made every viewer appreciate the many uses of one of Queen's most classic and recognizable songs.

There were no posted comments or available media from Fox, Simon Fuller (Idol producer), or 19 Television on the use of the song.

American Idol usually promises several Queen songs to be featured in the show, and if they aren't played, they're sung. A few candidates singing horrible renditions of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' always find a way to filter through the system. :)
