March 10, 2006IT'S a crazy little thing called love. Love for Queen, that is, with one Australian couple so desperate to see the band - even without Freddie Mercury - they've spent thousands of dollars trying to lure them here.
The band's latest incarnation, Queen + Paul Rodgers, comprising Brian May, Roger Taylor and former Bad Company frontman Rodgers, is touring the US for the second time in less than a year.
Even Aruba, in the Caribbean, got a gig. Nicole Pule-Leech and her husband, Davyd, think it's our turn and have organised an internet campaign to persuade an Australian promoter to bring the band Down Under. They even sent a 10-page PowerPoint presentation to May for the band's consideration.
Visitors to www.freewebs.com/aussiequeens are asked to sign an online petition and visit the Michael Coppel Presents website to nominate Queen as an act they want to see.
Promoters want interest from at least 1000 people and Nicole Pule-Leech says they have reached that, raising hopes that the band might make it next year. Four promoters are interested and "they want it to happen", she says.
As a labour of love, it has been expensive, with the Bendigo couple's costs about to hit $5000.
"We were going to go to the Japan shows but decided to put the money back into Australia for fans here. We felt they should have come here, that they owed it to us. There is a huge amount of interest in the band here."
