Being Indian is fine but it can get very boring if we cease to see ourselves for what we actually are. Khushwant Singh became famous cracking Sardarji jokes. So did actor Mehmood parodying Tamilians. Nirad C Chaudhuri lampooned Bengalis, despite being one himself, and eventually settled down in Oxford after a whole life sucking up to the English. Yet Bengalis remained his most ardent fans. Freddie Mercury spent a lifetime denying his Parsi roots. Yet Queen was always India's favourite rock group.
