Sunday, August 24th 2008 will be a defining moment in Britain’s sporting history – the day that officially, London becomes the new host city for the next Olympic Games. To mark this historic occasion, the BBC, the organizers of London 2012 and the London authorities are working together to stage a major live concert on the Mall, in central London. And joining the proceedings to officially kick off the event will be the cast of London’s smash hit musical, Queen & Ben Elton’s We Will Rock You who will open the show with two of sport’s greatest anthems, Queen’s “We Will Rock You†and “We Are The Championsâ€.The two numbers are the grand finale of the musical and every night and guarantee to bring the Dominion theatre crowd to its feet where the show has played to a standing ovation every night since opening in May 2002.Their appearance is sure to be a reminder of the last occasion the We Will Rock You cast played a concert in the Mall – for the Jubilee concert, and who can ever forget the dramatic opening moment when Queen guitarist Brian May appeared live on the roof of Buckingham Palace to play the national anthemBBC1 will show the concert live at 3.15pm. It will feature a line up of national and international performers, including artists such as The Feeling, Il Divo, McFly, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Katherine Jenkins and McFly. Throughout the show there will be films featuring some of the UK’s Olympic winners including, Sir Steve Redgrave, Dame Kelly Holmes and Jonathan Edwards, covering the areas of youth and legacy within the Games. The programme starts as soon as the Olympic flag has been handed over to London Mayor Boris Johnson in Beijing.
