It really gets me how the 21st Century incarnation of Queen appears to downplay Freddie's creativity and songwriting talent. I completely believe it is a deliberate and shameless attempt to somehow give validity to what they've down in recent years, as if they've earnt the right to call themselves Queen without Freddie as 'all he was was our gay flamboyant singer' and not the the whole story which would acknowledge the sheer amount of the back catalogue he wrote, which in my opinion includes all their best songs....
I cannot stand any Queen live performance from 1986. For a start there's the dress code, that's far enough, it wasn't their fault it was goddam 1986, baggy and primary colours were in. My first gripe is there was little/no improvisation. It could be argued that Queen never improvised particularly, they certainly never strayed from the same setlist night after night after night after night after night but I'm sure that bugs everyone....
When I listen to Queen I often try to block out the layers apon layers of guitars, voices and nearer the end synths. This is why I love the Montreal 1981 gig - Queen's 'Let it be: Naked'. As I type this I'm listening to 'Pain is so close to pleasure' Like the other Mercury-Deacon compositions a very pleasant pop song....
