Well that was it for England - and those of us who get NO thrills from football will regret it for no longer having the streets, parks and shops to ourselves for a few hours. Yesterday I found a great little 'football free zone' in the nether regions of a local leisure/social club to which I belong....

I noticed on a BM.Com news item this week that WWRY is heading to Chinese-speaking territory next year...I'm interested because, alongside German, Chinese is the other language I studied to degree level. We also have a very large Chinese population in this part of Kent - after this year's local Chinese New Year concert, I'd been thinking about which Queen songs might translate well into Chinese....

As previously mentioned, I was going to write a few words about the meeting concerning the future of Adult Education in my area. I do a 'Singing for Pleasure' class which is purely recreational. Our teacher hopess to get us to sing in a local music festival later this year....

I know I mentioned at the end of my last post that I was going to comment on Adult Education - I'll revert on that one another time... I saw a couple of  items on the TV this morning - one was some news from the Outer Hebrides - (how often do we get that?) - a ferry company has started a Sunday service to transport tourists there despite objections from locals who wish to keep the Sabbath as it is....

Well, who knows if it will come to that? They are certainly not happy about the new National Health Service contract - described as 'a kick in the teeth'. Well, if you've suffered one of those, don't try and see a dentist - THEY'RE not happy about the contract EITHER....

It's a week now since we put our clocks forward an hour for summer time. Americans and Canadians normally call this 'daylight saving', a term which, for some reason, I find rather quaint. The UK and Republic of Ireland remain an hour behind central Europe the whole year round now - I believe that the clock changes happen uniformly these days, whereas before, there may have been a difference of a week or two - we'd find ourselves on the same time as our European neighbours - or, as I found during one perplexing autumnal journey to Belgium a few years ago, be two hours adrift! The idea of time zones is an issue in itself....

I read in 'The Times' this week that an American teacher was sent on leave for comparing George W Bush to Hitler. His words were picked up by a student's recording using a listening device in class. Apparently, conservative parents in the US are concerned about left-wing views in the classroom....

I think that Brian's words about the so-called 'War on Terror' are among the most important he's ever placed on his soapbox. It reminded me that, whilst I was researching the message of his song 'Put Out the Fire' I viewedMichael Moore's film 'Bowling for Columbine'....

I've discovered that the transition from being a languages teacher to being a humanities teacher has not been so great after all. On Friday, I was on a course about teaching history. I could pick up straight away on 'dodgy' questions - those that already contain words with a bias- like 'Was the Treaty of Versailles fair?' and 'Who was to blame for the Treaty of Versailles?' Yesterday I found an old book called 'The Pageant of History', published in 1964....

Well I found myself on a 3-day case on Monday. It was a case involving violence and lies - not nice at all but an eye-opener and worth the experience, I'd say. There are those that knock the jury system we have but, despite its shortcomings, I don't see that we can replace it with 'professional jurors', as has been suggested....
