DRM: What does it mean to me?
Apple Inc. announced yesterday the launch of iTunes Plus, a new worldwide portal for the company's popular iTunes Music Store that will sell only DRM-free music. The premium tracks will go for $1.39, 40 cents more than most regular songs, and be encoded at a higher bit rate. But no more geek talk. Here's what you need to know PATRICK WHITE From Friday's Globe and Mail June 1, 2007 at 9:07 AM EDT What is DRM? DRM stands for digital rights management, an all-encompassing term for the meddlesome scrambling and inscription systems that control what you can do with digital audio and video files. The most common form of DRM limits the number of times you can copy a file. Found on CDs and DVDs, DRM can also restrict the use of a digital file to a single device or a single continent

Rocking with the classics
WHAT would a music teacher do if a student, when asked to name three composers of classical music, nominated Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Joni Mitchell? In all likelihood they'd give them a tick, because far from being the exclusive realm of Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms, the world of classical music is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from the domain of commercial pop. Just take a look at this year's Queensland Orchestra season, where Herbie Hancock has just featured, Queen's greatest hits are around the corner, and the year closes with The Whitlams. A few years back, that would have seemed as improbable as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra working with The Hilltop Hoods (yes, they are, right now), or the English National Opera presenting a new opera about Colone

Big success for Rock at the Racecourse
07 June 2007 THE venue is more used to the sounds of joyous punters cheering their winning mount or unlucky tipsters crying into their beer. But it was the music of legendary bands Queen and the Bee Gees which filled the air as about 2,500 music fans from toddlers to pensioners attended the first Rock At The Racecourse at Fakenham. And organisers were so pleased with the turnout and reaction that they hope to make it an annual event at the popular racecourse. “It went really well and the atmosphere was brilliant,” was Russells' Promotions joint managing director Andy Russell's simple verdict on Friday night's event. “It was the first year we have held it here and to get those sort of figures gives us a great platform for next year.”
